FAQ

Questions Kiwi parents returning to work ask

What do I put on my CV after years at home with kids?
More than you think. Your work history before the break, plus everything you ran while at home: budgets, logistics, school committees, sports club roles, volunteering, caring for family members. Our free AI builds a proper one-page CV that presents all of it as the real experience it is. Build yours free here.
How do I explain the gap on my CV?
One plain sentence, no apology: “I took five years out to raise my kids and now I am ready to work.” Employers hiring entry-level and part-time roles care far more about whether you are reliable now than what the dates on your CV say. Put the sentence in your cover letter, say it the same way in the interview, and move on to what you can do.
Are there jobs that fit around school hours in NZ?
Yes. Retail, supermarkets, cafes, teacher aide roles, care work and admin all run part-time and school-hours shifts, and many NZ employers specifically want the daytime availability parents have. When you browse, filter for part-time, and mention your available hours up front in applications.
Do employers care that I have been out of work for years?
Less than you fear, especially for entry-level and part-time roles where reliability beats recency. Some employers actively prefer parents returning to work because they are organised, settled and stay longer. The trick is presenting the gap with confidence, which is exactly what our free CV builder helps with.
What should I be paid after time out of the workforce?
The NZ adult minimum wage is $23.95 per hour from 1 April 2026, and most roles pay above it. Pay rates have moved a lot in the last few years, so check our free Salary tool before you accept anything. Time out of work is not a reason to accept less than the current market rate.
Do I need to retrain or get new qualifications first?
For most entry-level and part-time roles, no. Care work, retail, hospitality, warehousing and admin hire on attitude and reliability, with training provided on the job. If you want a qualification later, many care employers fund NZQA study while you work.
Is this just for mums?
Not at all. Dads, grandparents raising kids, people returning after caring for a family member, illness or redundancy: anyone coming back after time out gets the same free tools and the same fair treatment. Our AI never penalises a career gap, whatever the reason for it.
I’m a NZ employer keen on hiring returners. How does this help?
Every returner on findmeajob has free AI prep tools before applying: a CV builder that turns their years out of the workforce into experience you can assess, and an AI Interview Simulator so they arrive confident. Each application comes with a one-page Interview / Maybe / Skip recommendation. Free to post a standard listing, Pro $29 featured, Unlimited $99/month. No contracts.
