FAQ

Questions about decoding a job ad

What does "rock star" or "ninja" in a job ad really mean?
They mean "we want one person to do three people's work". It's a signal to probe scope and expectations in the interview before accepting.
Why do NZ job ads hide the salary?
Three reasons: the employer doesn't want internal staff to see it, they haven't settled on a band, or they want to negotiate down once they know what you'd take. Always ask for a band early.
What are red flags in a job ad?
"Family-like culture", "wears many hats", "fast-paced", "must be resilient", and new role with no clear manager named. Our tool flags them and explains what they usually hide.
What does "fast-paced environment" actually mean?
Most of the time it means under-resourced. Sometimes it means genuinely high-growth. The difference is whether you'll have time to do the work well — ask about that in the interview.
How do I tell if a job ad is exaggerated?
The title is two levels above the salary band, the responsibility list has 20+ bullets, and the "about us" paragraph is longer than the role description. Our AI decoder scores the gap.
