Experienced barista / Cafe Assistant

Jandal Lane café is a popular café in Christchurch near New Brighton Pier. We pride ourselves in delivering first class customer service along with outstanding coffee and food. Our staff are a fun-loving group and are great to work with. Currently Under new Ownership as of early July.

We are currently looking to employ an experienced barista to join our team on a part-time / Casual basis.

What you’ll be doing:
Greeting customers with a friendly, welcoming attitude
Taking orders accurately at the POS and handling transactions
Running food and beverages to tables efficiently
Maintaining a clean, tidy dining area and clearing tables quickly
Prepping and cooking basic cafe fare (e.g., preparing cabinet items, toasties, fried goods, and simple breakfast/lunch orders)
Assisting with general kitchen cleanup and dishwashing when needed
What we’re looking for:
Previous hospitality, customer service, or basic kitchen experience (barista skills are a huge plus!)
Basic knife skills and comfort working around commercial kitchen equipment
Strong communication skills and a team-first, jump-in-where-needed attitude
Ability to stay calm, organised, and friendly during peak busy periods
Flexibility to work weekend shifts and busy mornings
An active, vibrant and customer focused personality
Must have valid NZ work rights and reliable transport to New Brighton

This is a week day/weekend role with 6-20 hours a week depending on your availability and you will need to be comfortable working weekends. This is a rotating roster so some flexibility in your university schedule would be advantageous. You may be needed to work on Saturday / Sunday / Public Holidays.

This role with day time hours only. Exact days and times can be discussed with the employer and there will be between 6-20 hours or more available depending on your availability. Weekend shifts may be required on occasion.

Pay rate related to experience and work performance.

- Make and serve quality coffee and other hot and cold drinks
- Take orders from customers and ring them through the till
- Keep the café clean, tidy, and stocked with supplies
- Prep food or baking items as needed
- Work as part of a small team during busy periods
- Chat with regulars and make sure customers feel welcome

- Ability to be friendly and patient with customers
- Willingness to learn how to use a coffee machine and café equipment
- Available for casual shifts that might include mornings and weekends
- A bit of physical stamina (café work keeps you on your feet)
